School Committee · Meeting of October 22, 2026

STONEHAM — The Stoneham School Committee voted 5-0 to formalize fiscal year 2027 budget transfers shifting more than $1 million out of special education accounts. Budget Director Diane said the reclassification, not a cut, moved $1,015,603 out of special education student-facing lines into salaries, regular education and technology and facilities budgets, offset by stronger-than-expected state circuit breaker and federal IDEA reimbursements. The committee also accepted $1,170,309 in grants, including a $713,892 IDEA special education grant and a $50,000 Fair Share Earmark grant funding new district vans.

Superintendent Dr. Kristin DeFrancisco presented the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents' Certificate of Academic Excellence to senior Christina Thorne and led all six principals through joint school improvement plan presentations. Diane called fiscal year 2027 "as far from a normal year as I've had in my 20 years in school business." Members also voted 5-0 to fund graduation activities through clothing donation bin proceeds instead of the operating budget.
