Finance Board Creates Audit Subcommittee

Finance & Advisory Board · Meeting of August 3, 2026

Stoneham's Finance & Advisory Board voted 9-0 to create an audit subcommittee to translate the town's annual audit for residents. Member Ryan Robinson, a CPA, proposed the panel to review the independent auditor's management letter and internal-control findings without duplicating the Select Board's oversight of the audit contract. Member Brendan Dowdle warned of "the risk that we are meddling" in the auditors' agreed-upon scope, while the presiding board member countered that the finance board and Select Board are "two independent bodies" that don't need to coordinate on internal committee structure.

Three members, including Robinson, signed up to serve. Resident Michelle Perry of 35 Gould Street also used public comment to again raise concerns about town cash-handling controls, urging a "cash-free Stoneham." The board also reviewed a draft budget department contact list with several unfilled staff gaps.
